Job Description

 

 

Background:  The Association for a Better New York is a highly regarded coalition of more than 300 business, labor, nonprofit and political leaders who work together to contribute fresh ideas and innovative plans that set a clean course for managing solutions to the city’s challenges before they become overwhelming problems.  The ABNY power breakfasts are the premier forum for political leaders to announce programs and generate conversation about critical issues facing New Yorkers. 

 

The Position: The Association for a Better New York is seeking an exceptional individual to become its next Executive Director.  (This person will also be the Executive Director of the ABNY Foundation.) He or she should be a strong leader who has the power and presence to advocate successfully on behalf of the Association for a Better New York in the public and private sectors as well as be comfortable raising money for the Foundation.  Reporting directly to the Chair, Bill Rudin, the Executive Director must be highly intelligent, ambitious, energetic, creative, a strong, hands-on manager, and an effective communicator who can help in planning, developing, and implementing programs important for ABNY as well as promoting and marketing ABNY.  He or she must be able to create effective partnerships within ABNY and with other external constituencies, including government leaders, community-based organizations and government agencies, as well as represent the Chair as needed. 

 

This person must be skilled at planning, an excellent writer, detail oriented, and extremely organized with a demonstrated ability to establish priorities and achieve results.  Knowledge of New York City, federal and New York State politics and government is critical.  In addition, he or she must be able to work collaboratively with staff to promote an open, inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork with a minimum of ego.

 

Specific responsibilities:

  • Manage the overall operations of ABNY, including a small staff, and provide strategic leadership.
  • Develop and maintain external relationships with donors, members and leaders at the city, state and federal levels.
  • Develop and maintain sound financial policies; prepare budgets and see that the organization operates within budgetary guidelines.
  • Communicate the strategic vision of the organization effectively both internally and externally, maintaining and growing the ABNY brand.
  • Develop and coordinate special events, including the Power Breakfasts.

 Qualifications:

·         A Bachelor's degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred.

·         Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment and the self-confidence to delegate critical responsibilities while maintaining authority over them.

·         A demonstrated record of leadership and success in strategic planning and problem solving.

·         Fundraising experience preferred.

·         Proven track record as a successful manager and motivator of staff.

·         Talent for developing, marketing and articulating the organization’s mission and core values.

·         Excellent understanding of urban issues and the importance of a balanced, mixed-use community.

·         Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
