Job Description
Background:
New York Service for the Handicapped (“the Agency”) owns and operates Camp Oakhurst (“the Camp”), a 15-acre camp located in Oakhurst, New Jersey, that for over 100 years has provided a full range of recreational experiences for both children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. The Camp serves over 500 individuals each year and runs an eight-week summer session for children and a two-week summer session for adults. It also provides overnight respite care and day recreation throughout the year.
The Agency is managed by an Executive Director who directs the fundraising, grants administration, finances and some consumer outreach from its headquarters in New York City. The day-to-day operations of the camp are managed by a resident director in New Jersey who reports to the Executive Director. The operating budget of the Camp is $1.7 million and staff consists of 10 year-round employees, 60 summer employees, and 10 contract respite staff for the school year running from September through June.
After many years of exemplary leadership, the current Executive Director has announced his retirement. As such, the Board of the New York Service for the Handicapped is seeking an exceptional candidate to take his place.
The Position:
Camp Oakhurst is looking for a dynamic and dedicated leader to be its new Executive Director. He or she must have the power and presence to advocate successfully on behalf of the New York Service for the Handicapped in the public and private sectors. The position of Executive Director is a critical, visible position requiring demonstrated fund raising ability, strong management experience, exceptional leadership ability and a successful track record of working with or for government, quasi-public agencies and non-for-profit organizations.
The Executive Director must be someone with sensitivity and compassion and who is committed to the Agency’s core mission. This person must share the Board’s expansive view of the opportunities available to expand the Camp’s programs and services. He or she must be highly intelligent, a leader and a self-starter who can develop and implement those initiatives. He or she will most likely have substantial experience with persons with disabilities and can demonstrate significant accomplishments and past successes. In addition, he or she must be a hands-on manager, strategic thinker and planner, problem solver, and be able to respond to crises quickly and effectively. The Executive Director must be able to work closely with the Board and staff to promote an open, inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork with a minimum of ego. In addition, he or she will be bright, diplomatic, analytical, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment as well as a sense of humor.
Specific Responsibilities:
· Manage the overall operations of New York Service for the Handicapped.
· Work with the Board to diversify funding and expand the donor base including foundations, individuals, corporate donors, government agencies and well as identifying new funding sources.
· Oversee fiscal management of the agency by developing and maintaining sound financial policies; prepare budgets and see that the Agency operates within the budgetary guidelines; review service statistics to ensure Agency is in compliance with granting agencies and the Department of Health.
· Provide vision and strategic leadership and work collaboratively with the Board providing ideas for expansion of programs and services.
· Serve as primary spokesperson for the Agency and make presentations before corporate executives, elected officials, public agency administrators, and the public.
· Provide leadership and guidance to staff in maintaining, developing and evaluating effective programs.
· Work with staff to maintain standards of care as outlined in staff manuals and orientation and training meetings.
· Review surveys sent to consumers to ensure Agency is delivering the highest quality service.
· Respond directly to consumers and/or parents when necessary and review all incident reports.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school; advanced degree preferred.
· At least ten years of senior management experience in a non-profit organization, working with the disabled.
· Strong fiscal skills with experience in creating and controlling operating and program budgets of comparable size or greater.
· Recognized achievement in donor and funder identification and cultivation as well as the ability to generate revenue from state and federal agencies, individual donors, and foundations.
· Excellent spoken and written communication skills including grant writing. Must be a passionate and inspiring spokesperson that can raise awareness of the Agency and the Camp.
· Experience in building, mentoring and motivating a dedicated staff that are able to collaborate and problem-solve.
· A strong commitment to the needs of the handicapped.
