Job Description
Background: Hunter College is a national leader in urban public education. Founded in 1870, it is the largest college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system and one of the oldest public colleges in the country. Currently, 21,000 students attend the College, pursuing both undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 170 different programs of study.
Comprised of several schools and centers, Hunter is an urban leader in educating a diverse student body. Hunter also maintains distinct leadership in educating women, providing educational opportunities for minorities, and conducting advanced research and study in disciplines across the academic spectrum. A leader in serving the public through research on public policy questions in the areas of aging populations, AIDS, and gene structure, Hunter also has stellar social work and education schools, as well as a top-rate health science program that offers one of New York City’s few Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing.
Jennifer Raab has been President of Hunter College for ten years. She is very active in the New York City community and is constantly striving to enhance the College’s reputation through her efforts to increase awareness and appreciation for Hunter’s mission. Towards that end, she has assembled a senior management team which includes a Chief of Staff who manages the President’s office, works closely with the college leaders, communicates her wishes in her absence, and advises the President on college operations, management, and policy issues.
The Position:
Hunter College is seeking a highly intelligent, committed and experienced manager to become the Chief of Staff to the President. Under the direct supervision of the President, the Chief of Staff supports the President in all matters, managing her schedule, setting the tone and direction of the office, overseeing special programs and events, and acting as liaison between the President’s office and the staff, the College’s leaders, alumni, the CUNY community, elected officials, and the public. He or she must be able to promote an open, inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork. In addition, he or she will be diplomatic, analytical, of the highest integrity, and will possess sound judgment as well as a sense of humor.
Specific Responsibilities:
· Manages the Office of the President, overseeing work schedules and supervising administrative staff.
· Manages all correspondence with responsibility for tracking, accurate content, and timeliness of responses.
· Coordinates meeting schedule for President. Responsible for tracking assignments and following up with faculty, executive, and administrative staff.
· Makes certain that institutional priorities and objectives are represented and managed.
· Liaises with fundraising and development division, coordinating special events and outreach.
· Handles and directs special projects as assigned by the President.
· Represents the President’s office in meetings with other Hunter staff, CUNY officials, College leaders, alumni, the community, elected officials, and the public.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree is required with an advanced degree preferred.
· At least eight years of senior-level management experience, preferably in the area of higher education, government or the nonprofit arena.
· Knowledge of New York City politics and government helpful.
· Demonstrated ability to lead projects, work well with people, and foster and facilitate collaboration.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Detail oriented and extremely organized, with proven ability to establish priorities and achieve results.
· Excellent written and communication skills.
· A strong commitment to the goals of urban public higher education and an appreciation for working in a multicultural, multi-racial environment.
