Background:
The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization working with 50 City agencies and offices, 300 institutional funders, and 100 community-based partners. The Mayor’s Fund is designed to promote partnerships between the City and the private sector to support public programs. Established in 1994, the organization serves as an important vehicle for foundations, corporations and individuals to contribute to City programs that enhance the lives of New Yorkers. The Mayor’s Fund is committed to facilitating innovative public-private partnerships that support NYC’s emerging needs, while simultaneously evaluating the efficacy and merit of programs for future funding. The Mayor’s Fund and its partners advance initiatives that improve the lives of New Yorkers from all walks of life and across all five boroughs. In building partnerships, the Mayor’s Fund seeks to seed promising, evidence-based models; evaluate the efficacy of new programs.
Position:
This exciting and re-imagined Executive Director role will offer a new opportunity for partnership between the city and the philanthropic community. As the face of the organization and the chief fundraiser who will set the tone and the overall strategy for the organization’s fundraising performance, this dynamic leader will identify, assess, and secure appropriate partnership opportunities to advance the city directly, and through the City-affiliated non-profit organizations with corporate and community partners. Such areas may include, but are not limited to, financial support and in-kind donations to advance special projects, programs, capacity building, or community or facility infrastructure development and maintenance. Building a national donor base and network will be a top priority for this role as The Mayor’s Fund for New York City works toward its goals of expanding its impact and making New York City’s economy stronger, reduce inequality, improve public safety, and build a stronger, healthier city that delivers for all New Yorkers.
The Executive Director will be experienced in fundraising strategies and implementation, long-term strategic planning, and have proven success in securing significant funding through corporate sponsorships, foundations, fundraising events, annual campaigns, and major individual donors.
The ideal candidate will be an innovative, forward thinking and entrepreneurial-minded individual. The Executive Director (ED) will directly oversee the Chief of Staff, General Counsel, Director of Programs and Policies, Director of Development, and the Director of Finance & Operations. The ED will report to a Board of Directors about financials, new partnerships, and programs, and will assist the Deputy Mayor in managing the Board of Advisors.
Responsibilities:
- Under guidance from the Deputy Mayor for Strategic Initiatives and the Board of The Mayor’s Fund, galvanize philanthropic and institutional partners to drive transformational resources to the city of New York.
- Quickly establish a revitalized relationship between our existing donors in the city and the philanthropic community (High Net Worth, Institutional and Corporate); while also seeking and building diverse streams of revenue to establish new markets for cultivation (capital markets, social impact bonds, etc.)
- Set and achieve ambitious but attainable goals for new individual donors, foundations, and corporate prospects by articulating and executing on the vision of the administration to generate $15-20M annually in revenue.
- Strategically engage the Board of Directors, providing them with regular updates and seeking input on key decisions affecting the organization.
- Lead the management, fiscal oversight, revenue diversification and alignment of the fund to the Administration’s priorities.
- Liaise with the Mayor’s Office and City agency heads to gain an understanding of the priorities of the administration and translate those into successful fundraising initiatives.
- Oversee and implement MFANYC institutional giving strategy, including research, reporting, and management of partnerships with support from the Director of Programs and Policies.
- Cultivate donor relations with support from the Senior Manager of Development.
- Serve as the Fund’s primary spokesperson for press inquiries and public events.
- Manage fundraising revenue reporting and reconciliation and approve financial reports including annual operating budget.
- Review and approve payment requests, invoices and checks for payments.
- Authorize and review bank transfers, wire payments, and bank statements.
- Approve annual audit and tax return filings with the CAO and Finance Manager.
- Review and approve all contracts for goods and services and grant agreements.
- Oversee compliance with organization’s policies and procedures including City contract, Conflict of Interest Board filings and Organization by-laws.
Qualifications:
- Experienced fundraiser with existing relationships within the philanthropic community serving the City of New York.
- Demonstrated experience in raising a minimum of $5M annually with a track record of growing revenue year over year.
- Experience cultivating, closing, and stewarding 6-7 figure donations.
- Proven track record of providing strategic direction, leadership, and operational management of fundraising initiatives, resulting in growth.
- Success in fostering positive organizational culture and ensuring compliance with employment laws.
- Excellent communication, writing, research, analytical, organizational, interpersonal, time-management and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to take initiative, prioritize duties, pay close attention to detail, prioritize tasks, work independently and under pressure to meet specific deadlines.
- Experience leading and managing multiple complex projects in a fast-paced setting.
- Skilled at building strong funder coalitions and engaging a wide range of stakeholders.
- Flexible and creative approach to making plans, using resources and solving problems.
- Knowledgable about New York City
The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City’s compensation package includes hybrid work (3 days in the office) and exceptional benefits including employer funded health, vision, and dental insurance.
Compensation for this role is $200,000 – $220,000 commensurate with experience.
